EXPERIENCE DANSKINETICS

A journey set to music: There is a progression, starting with warm-ups and gentle yoga based movements, including stretching and breathing. We then move into to livelier more flowing movements, to high-energy, aerobic dancing to heartfelt and prayerful movement, and finally back to stillness. The journey is based on moving through the chakras, the energy centers in the body. We move from earth (slow, rhythmic movements of the spine and lower body) through water, fire, air, and ether (open space), and finally to the place of pure spirit and inner stillness.

A creative mix of music tailored to the setting: I use lots of different kinds of music, from rock n’ roll, global fusion, hip-hop, big band, show tunes, and jazz to chanting and nature sounds. We may dance with scarves, use rattles and other noisemakers, masks or toys.

A multi-level class, that can be adapted to any age & fitness level: The pacing, and the amount of structure that I provide varies, depending on the group and their level of fitness and dance experience. Danskinetics is lively yet non-competitive, as everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace and move in a way that feels good to their body. I usually teach to the average fitness level of the group.

A flexible structure which allows for creativity and spontaneity: In a typical class I will lead the class in specific movements, and also provide a looser structure for creative free form dancing, as well as opportunities for the class members to lead. We may dance as a large group in a circle or in lines, or break up into smaller groups. The variety of music and movement and the flow between structured and unstructured dancing keeps each person engaged as she or he gets a fantastic workout.

A safe place to let go of self-consciousness and judgment: In Danskinetics, the key word is permission. Permission to move freely, to feel our feelings, to listen to what our body needs, to play, to travel inside ourselves or make contact with others. Most of all, I create an atmosphere that encourages you to accept yourself and your body, exactly as it is, from moment to moment.

Kripalu Danskinetics offers transformational fun for people of all ages, shapes and sizes.

BRING DANSKINETICS TO YOUR WORKPLACES AND GATHERINGS

I can tailor the class to a variety of settings, including stress management program, a holistic retreat, a yoga studio, adult education class, senior citizens or Mommy n’me groups. It is great for any size group, but especially fun for groups of 10 or more. I also teach Danskinetics as a benefit for non-profit organizations.

Danskinetics works well as a single class or workshop as well as in a series. Unlike more traditional dance classes, each class is self-contained. There is no build up of complex sequences or steps that need to be learned over time. Danskinetics is a class for everyone—even those who don’t like to dance (or say they don’t)!

WHO CREATED KRIPALU DANSKINETICS?

Danskinetics was originally created at Kripalu Center in Lenox, Massachusetts in the 80’s as a blend of yoga and dance. Kripalu Center is one of the largest and best-known training centers for yoga teaching in the U.S. There are Kripalu trained Danskinetics instructors teaching nationwide. For more information, see the Danskinetics information at www.kripalu.org. Better yet, get yourself to Kripalu to experience Danskinetics at the source—classes take place daily.
